The historical core of the town of Jablonná in Podještědí was surrounded by walls with bastions probably as early as 1312. Directly behind the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the best-preserved part of the walls and, together with the torso, the Baroque cemetery chapel (ossuary - dated to 1765) and the remains of the historic brewery building from the 19th century.
. At the beginning of the 21st century, only an abandoned torso overgrown with overgrown greenery could be seen in the space.
At the beginning of the restoration, a part of the walls with the torso of the former cemetery chapel was stabilized and preserved. The works were carried out according to the type and extent of damage by classic masonry restoration, preserving the original value, but suppressing the modern expression of all additional interventions.
In the place of the torso of the rectangular annex to the wall bastion made of sandstone blocks, a carpentry-bound viewing gazebo was mounted on the crown of the masonry. A small structure with wooden cladding on the exterior and wooden tables and benches on the interior serves as protection for the public from the sun or bad weather.
Following the completion of the construction work, the adjacent area was restored. After clearing and excavating the rubble soil, a new road made of basalt stones was laid using local material. At the same time, cultivation soil was spread on the free areas for grass. The colorful border of the path, formed by low green bushes, was enhanced by the planting of an apple tree in a central position.
The park furniture (benches, trash cans), placed by the path and under the apple tree, was supplemented with information signs about the history of the adjacent part of the city walls with the church, chapel and brewery.
The restoration of the area with the remains of historical buildings from the Gothic through the Baroque to the present day is only a small part of a larger construction project. The representatives of the city in Jablonné in Podještědí are preparing to open up the entire, long-term closed space and create a completely new quiet zone with safe passage and a view from the new gazebo to the city's forecourt.
Work on the restoration of the area between the wall and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Jablonné in Podještědí
The conservation of the cemetery chapel was carried out mainly by historical lime technologies and traditional mason's craft. Findings during the work (hidden paving, torso windows...) were documented, secured and covered.
The gazebo was realized by a carpenter, including the furniture.
Found basalt paving stones, placed in a sand bed, were used for the new road.
Rainwater is diverted by drainage into a natural reservoir and used for watering apple trees, bushes and lawns.
The construction of the gazebo is connected to the electrical installation.
